- : Our Supras here often get around 3200cps on 28.8 connects on maximum
- : compression ZIP files. The lines not on our modem bank are not the same
- : quality (some were run underground from the house next door, with the
- : sprinklers), and these still get over 3100cps if I change the S191 so it
- : connects at 28.8K. Most likely, the modems you are connecting to are
- : USR's. In that case, you can't use the 256 or 512 byte packets and
- : obviously can't receive the data faster than the other modem sends it.
- : Keep in mind, it takes more of the modems CPU power to compress than it
- : does to decompress - what rate to you get if you send in the other
- : direction?
-
- Excuse me? The 256 or 512 byte packets are not available to my Supra so I
- couldn't get them no matter who I call. And I have called all kinds of
- modems, not just USRs. If you read what I wrote, you'd see I get even
- less than a 28800 connect should allow. This has *never* happened on my
- Supra. Could it be because the Supra defaults to *not* monitor line
- conditions and initiate retrains?
-
- : Try this (yes I know it is NOT representative of typical data transfers):
- : Make a .BMP file of all one color (the white default in most programs
- : works great). The both the Supra and the PPI will send it faster locked
- : at 7200bps than the USR does at 28.8 or even 33.6.
-
- You've already seen my report on transfer speeds for non-compressed data.
-
- If not, let me know and I'll post it again.
